Day 10 - Zadar (Swimming, Sightseeing & Sun)
29.06.2019
33 °C
We had a relaxing morning, before heading out to the beach. This was Titus’ first time swimming in the sea!
We walked to a part of the beach which seemed nice. There is no sand on their beaches - it goes straight from land to sea. Next to the sea they have concrete where there are little cafes etc set up and where you can walk across. They also have a big speaker with music going.
We took turns going swimming while either Auke or I stayed with whichever kid didn’t want to go swimming at the time. The sea was such a nice temperature - something you never experience in New Zealand.

After we went swimming we all got an icecream and a drink and relaxed at one of the cafes.

For the most part, swimming in the sea in Zadar was absolutely perfect. We say for the most part because apparently speedos are still very much a thing in Croatia!!
We headed home and all had showers. Titus then had a nap.
We weren’t sure what to have for lunch - but Auke knew exactly what he wanted. The day before as we drove into Zadar we had spotted KFC. Even though it was nearly a one hour round trip, off Auke went to buy us all KFC for lunch. He was so excited he bought enough for a small army. At KFC Croatia, you can’t buy original recipe. It only comes in the kids meal boxes. Also, wicked wings are called hot wings. The kids meals come with a piece of corn in it!

In the afternoon we headed back out to see all the popular sights in Zadar. We first went through the Land Gate which leads to Old Town. We came across a lolly shop where the girls could pick n mix some Croatian lollies so of course we had to stop in there!

Next we went to see the sea organ which is an organ that is played by the waves in the sea. On the way there we looked at some local markets set up along the waterfront. They also had children’s bouncy castles, little rides etc there so we stopped for the girls to go on a car ride.

Near the sea organ, we also saw the sun dial. This is a solar powered circle that lights up when the sun sets. Unfortunately we couldn’t see this in action as Titus was incredibly cranky and we had to go home before sunset time!

We then had a look at the famous churches such as St Mary’s. We looked around Old Town and then we headed to a gelato place which we had previously googled. We wanted to go there because they make huge icecream sundaes with fruit, lollies etc in them.

Auke had to give Titus a bottle, so Ali went inside with the girls to pick an icecream. As they couldn’t really speak English, and Ali couldn’t see the icecream sundaes anywhere, we ended up ordering just an ordinary gelato icecream cone. It wasn’t until after Ali was finished and walked out the store that Auke told her he had found the menu with the fancy ones. Ali took Titus and Auke ordered himself one of the nice ones - at least one of us got to try one!!

The girls really wanted to climb up the bell tower of St Anastasia’s so Auke took them up and took some photos from the top while Ali stayed with Titus (who was still crying and upset) at the bottom.

We then headed home - quickly stopping for some Nutella pancakes along the way. When I say quick - what I really mean is that was the intention. In reality it took them about 15 minutes to make the pancakes which you can imagine was no fun with a cranky Titus!

We all showered again and then put the kids to bed.

Fun fact about Zadar - it is the oldest continuously inhabited Croatian city which is fascinating!
Another fact about what we have seen in Europe in emerald - they still have plastic straws!! Woohoo!!!
